I have been weaving baskets for 8 years but also enjoy rug hooking and sewing.( This is why my baskets have liners. LOVE fabric!)

Over the years  I have taken classes from Beth Hester, Judy Zugish and Jill Choate.

When I teach classes that involve children I find these to be the most rewarding. This is a tradition that must be taught or it will be lost. Hopefully, at least one of my students will find a love of weaving and keep this history alive.

Dyeing reed is the perfect reason to be outside all day.

I love seeing the colors hanging on the fences and in the trees. It is wonderful to live on a farm and have those things to take advantage of.
Can't imagine hot dye dripping or trying to rinse and dry pounds of reed in the house. What a mess!

This is a Bluegrass Purse SMALL made a few years ago using walnuts from an OLD tree near where I worked. It made the most beautiful warm coffee color dye that I have ever been able to make and I have used many different walnut trees. Due to age making it brittle and the high winds of a storm the old tree finally had to be cut down. Because of that I have never put a rim on this basket; not wanting to cover the wonderful walnut stain of the stakes that are turned under. I use this basket to hold my tools. The colors and design of this small basket inspire and encourage me to make each new basket as lovely as this one.

At Western Kentucky University I took a pottery class before graduating and really enjoyed it, but weaving baskets is my passion. I do not use patterns, but picture a design in my mind; take those colors and lengths of reed and weave them into a basket, that is pure pleasure.
